The notion that video games dull the mind is a common misconception. In actuality, many video games can be quite enlightening and, in some cases, enhance our cognitive abilities. This article explores the ways in which video games can foster creativity.

Video Gaming and Children’s Creativity
Research conducted by Michigan State University indicates that, on average, 12-year-olds who engage in video gaming tend to excel in creative tasks such as story writing and artistic drawing.
The study also examined the impact of other technologies, including mobile devices and internet usage, but found that these tools do not stimulate creativity to the same extent. This implies that video games may be uniquely effective in igniting our imagination compared to other forms of technology.
Diverse Creativity Levels Among Games
Scholars Seyedahmad Rahimi and Valerie Shute contend that while video games can fuel creativity, some types are notably more effective than others at enhancing imaginative thinking.
Games that present players with linear challenges often bolster problem-solving skills but fall short in promoting overall creativity. What’s needed are games that offer open-ended possibilities for exploration and customization. Titles that allow players to construct levels or personalize characters rank among the most creativity-inducing.
A perfect example is Minecraft, a game that cultivates creativity through its lack of defined objectives. While Minecraft survival servers offer leveling options, they lack set missions or narratives; players are left to create their adventures. The game’s hallmark feature is the freedom to design and erect structures within an expansive world, inspiring players to recreate entire cities or fabricate fantastical realms.
Other similar games, such as LittleBigPlanet, Roblox, The Sims, and Garry’s Mod, also involve world-building elements. Commonly categorized as sandbox games, they invite players to experiment and create. Additionally, sandbox mechanics can be found in titles like Fallout: New Vegas, Portal 2, and Animal Crossing. Not all of these games may be suitable for children, so it’s essential to consider this when selecting a game aimed at enhancing creativity (Minecraft, Roblox, and LittleBigPlanet are considered kid-friendly).
In addition to choosing the right type of game, it’s also important to ensure that children have an adequate gaming environment. This includes proper equipment and high-speed internet connectivity for a seamless gaming experience. Conducting an internet speed test can help assess your current internet performance, as a reliable connection reduces frustration during gaming.
Exploring Other Avenues for Creativity
While video games can certainly enhance creativity, they are not the only option. If you’re seeking to inspire creativity in yourself or in a child without the risk of excessive video gaming, consider engaging in various other creative pursuits, such as:
- Reading books
- Drawing or painting
- Building with Lego
- Composing original music
- Writing short stories
- Crafting poetry
- Producing YouTube content
- Photography
- Experimenting with makeup art
- Clay modeling
- Creating paper crafts
- Playing board games like Scrabble and Pictionary
- Choreographing your own dance performance
