Spring is Here! Craft Your Own Chocolate Pretzel Bird Nests

Recently, my eldest daughter returned home from college, and due to a snowstorm, we found ourselves stuck indoors (yippee!). This offered us a perfect opportunity to get creative in the kitchen.
I recalled some adorable bird’s nest treats I had come across earlier, and we decided to attempt making them ourselves. They’re widely featured online, and as I didn’t recall the original source, I had to rely on trial and error from a picture I had seen. If anyone has a refined approach, please let me know!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Pretzel rods (we used sticks, but standard ones work too)
- Candy melts or melting chocolate (we opted for Wilton, though chocolate chips are fine as well)
- Chocolate eggs (we went with Reese’s Pieces Eggs)

Start by taking a small handful of pretzels and breaking them into smaller pieces. Place them in a bowl, adding a drizzle of chocolate to coat. Keep mixing and drizzling until the pretzels are sufficiently covered without becoming overly soggy; too much moisture extends drying time.

Here is where you can get creative. I started forming mine into a pile and gradually shaped it to create a hollow section that could snugly hold three eggs. My daughter opted for a triangular formation before crafting her center. You’ll notice the chocolate solidifying as you shape it, so try to work quickly. Once ready, place the egg candies in the center, and you’re finished!
*Tip: If your nest becomes too rigid before adding the eggs, they may fall out. Drizzle a bit more chocolate into the depression, or hasten your assembly to ensure the pretzel chocolate adheres to the candy.

Let them dry until they solidify into a manageable piece you can move around. You can serve them as standalone treats or use them as delightful cupcake decorations. The possibilities are as boundless as your creativity!
Have fun!
