While shopping at the grocery store yesterday,

I was halted by the seasonal aisle brimming with pumpkin spice and apple-flavored goodies.

What does this signify?

It’s a clear indication that autumn is nearly upon us. Soon, we will witness the leaves transitioning in color,

and the air will turn brisk, signaling the return of school for the kids.

At this stage, it feels like normality is starting to take shape again, but the hectic nature of the holiday season isn’t too far off! The arrival of the holidays equates to increased time spent with family and friends, and you’ll want to ensure that nobody misses out on the celebrations

due to the influx of extra germs.

Holiday gatherings are always enjoyable since they unite our beloved friends and family (along with their germs). This year, I’m committed to staying a step ahead. I’m ready to deploy my trusted mom hacks to ensure everyone remains healthy.

  1. Manage Germs: While I can’t eliminate every germ from my home, I can ensure that frequently touched surfaces (like doorknobs, light switches, and trash can lids) are regularly cleaned with antibacterial wipes. Additionally, providing napkins next to snack bowls encourages guests to use them instead of their hands.
  1. Promote Handwashing: It’s straightforward to remind kids to wash their hands after using the restroom (or other activities). However, encouraging adults without appearing impolite is trickier. Nobody wants to tell Grandma to wash her hands before grabbing another chip after she’s just dealt with her dentures. Still, creating accessible handwashing stations can make this easier. Fun-smelling soaps and seasonal towels are excellent incentives. “Hey Grandma, do you love the scent of my new apple-cinnamon hand soap?”
  1. Well-Stocked Medicine Cabinet: Children often seem to be the ones who fall ill, which is understandable given their developing immune systems. I’m prepared for those “Sick just got real™” episodes with a fully stocked medicine cabinet that includes Children’s Advil® Suspension (for ages 2-11), Children’s Robitussin® (for ages 6+), and Children’s Dimetapp® (for ages 6+).
  1. Fresh Air In, Stale Air Out: On cool days, allow your home to ‘breathe’ before and after gatherings to prevent stuffiness. Utilize a fan for quicker results. If it’s too chilly, close the windows but keep the curtains drawn to let sunlight in, as the sun’s rays can help eliminate viruses and bacteria.
  1. Lower the Temperature: You don’t literally need to freeze, but try to keep the house cooler, especially during gatherings. Cold air makes it difficult for viruses to flourish. The winter months often see a rise in viral transmission because body temperatures are conducive and people are commonly indoors.
